The road situation nowadays

Antes de descrever a aventura, quero esclarecer que hoje o acesso é bastante fácil.

De Ilhéus até a entrada para Maraú são 87 km ou uma hora e dez minutos pela rodovia Ilhéus Itacaré e BA-001, ambas asfaltadas e lindas. Depois mais 44 km ou uma hora até o paraíso, pela BA-030, de terra.

Mas antes da construção da ponte sobre o rio das contas o percurso era bem diferente!!! Mais bonito, mais divertido, porém mais demorado, tenso e com um grande risco de ficar pelo caminho...

De Ilhéus ia-se para Itacaré pelo asfalto (mais antigamente ainda era de terra). Em Itacaré fazia- se a travessia de balsa pelo rio das contas, onde começava a diversão.

Before I share my adventures, I want to make it clear that nowadays this route is quite easy to do.

Maraú's entrance is 87 km away from Ilhéus, or one hour and ten minutes drive apart through the Ilhéus-Itacaré and BA-001 roads, both of them very scenic. Then there are still 44 km, or one our drive, to get to paradise, through the BA-030 dirt road.

However, before the bridge across Contas river was built this route was quite different! It was more scenic and more fun to go through, but also a lot more difficult, it took a lot longer to complete and the chances of being forced to stop somewhere along the way were very large...

From Ilhéus one had to take a paved road to Itacaré (not that long ago, that was a dirt road too). In Itacaré the crossing of the Contas river was made by ferry, the point where all the fun would start.

Once off the ferry, the options were heaps of sand during summer or pits of mud during winter.

avaliando o risco, o jeito é tirar o sapato e atravessar descalço para ver onde dá, tarefa para a co-piloto, no caso eu, como podem ver tirando a foto do outro lado da poça....
The only way to gauge the risks is to take your shoes off and walk through the water to find out where the crossing is possible, a task suited for the co-pilot – in this case, myself, as you can see since I took this picture from the other side of the pool...

dica, tirar a placa do veículo antes de começar a aventura, perdemos todas as vezes e tivemos que pagar, sempre dá aquela preguiça, acho que dessa vez vai dar, e aí prejuízo!
A tip: take the licence plate off the car before crossing! We lost our licence plates every time before and ended up having to pay for them. You always feel lazy and think that this one time it won't happen, just to lose the plate yet again!

PENÍNSULA DO MARAÚ

Maraú é meu ponto fixo de conexão com a vida real. O que seria isso?

É fixo porque lá estabeleci algumas raízes.

É vida real, pois os momentos que passo lá estou conectada com o planeta e com a natureza. Presto atenção quando chove e faz sol, quando a maré sobre e desce, se a lua está cheia ou minguante, com o vento, o barulho dos pássaros, cigarras, vejo e espero as frutas amadurecerem....e tudo isso influencia meu dia, minhas escolhas e minha vida.

A vida real para mim é também quando convivo com gente que está em contato com tudo isso e com as pessoas a sua volta, gente que está viva, que olha no olho e me faz gostar do ser humano.

Maraú is my permanent point of connection to real life. What would that mean? It is permanent because I've laid some roots there. It is real life, because during the moments I spend there I'm connected to the planet and to nature. I'm aware of when it rains and when the sun shines, of when the moon is crescent or waning, of the wind, of the sounds of birds and cicadas, I notice the fruits ripening and wait for them... All of this influence my day, my choices and my life.

For me, real life happens when I live by people who are connected to all of this and those around them, people who are alive, who look you in the eye and make me appreciate mankind.

Minha raiz foi fincada em Taipus de Dentro, a vila de pescadores que ainda preserva suas características, mais precisamente a beira mar, após cruzar o manguezal que separa a praia da vila.

A escolha deveu-se em parte ao acaso, movida pelo sonho de um dia morar fora de São Paulo e em decorrência da total inexperiência em fincar raízes!?!? O local além de lindo era completamente desprovido de aspectos básicos como: acesso, água e energia elétrica.

Hoje todos estes obstáculos foram removidos, na Bahia só o que não se pode é planejar, fora isso tudo dá certo!

I dug my roots in Taipus de Dentro, a fishermen village that still holds true to its traditional characteristics, specially by the sea, after one crosses the mangrove that separates the village from the beach.

This choice happened partly by chance, due to the dream of someday living away from São Paulo and to my complete lack of experience on setting roots anywhere. Besides being beautiful, this place was completely void of basic services such as roads, water and electricity.

Nowadays all of these obstacles went away, the only thing you are not able to do is planning, everything else will work itself out!

Na península cada local duas paisagens diferentes, uma na maré cheia e outra na maré baixa e de todas as paisagens um pouco: piscinas de corais, mar aberto com ondas, mar calmo de baía, morro de visuais incríveis, manguezais, beira de rio e águas cristalinas.

O acesso já foi uma aventura em anos atrás, chegava-se no aeroporto de Ilhéus, uma hora de carro até Itacaré, atravessava a balsa sobre o rio das contas, e aí era ou lama e poças gigantes no inverno ou areais quase intransponíveis no verão.

Agora com a ponte sobre o rio da contas o trajeto se faz em uma hora de carro no asfalto e uma hora em estrada de terra em condições razoáveis até Taipus de Dentro.

A seguir uma pequena amostra da diversidade.

In the peninsula each locale has two distinct sceneries, one during the high tide and another during the low tide, each and every one composed of all kinds of landscape: coral reefs, open sea with full-blown waves, tranquil bay waters, hills with astounding vistas, mangroves, riversides and crystalline waters.

Getting there was an adventure of its own years ago, one would land at the Ilhéus Airport, than drive one hour to Itacaré, where a ferry would do the crossing across the Contas river, from there it follows mud and gigantic puddles during the winter, or sand fields impossible to cross during the summer.

Now there is a bridge across the Contas river, and this last stretch is completed in one hour by car through a paved road plus another hour and a half through a pretty good dirt road to Taipus de Dentro.
